Child marriage prohibiition act in India not applicable for Muslims

Nine Muslim organizations in Kerala led by Indian Union Muslim League resolved on September 21 to move the Supreme Court to get Muslim women excluded from the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act of 2006. According to the Muslim leaders the law violates their fundamental right to practise their religion and follow Islamic Personal law which does not prescribe a minimum marital age. "No minimum age can be imposed on us as we have the right to follow our Personal law" said Bappu Musaliar, Chairman State Haj Committee.

Gujarat High court tries to ammend the act and make it special for Muslims. According to Gujurat high court, Muslim girls can marry after 15 years of age, while other religion girls cannot marry before they complete 18 years.
